Radford University recently had the honor of welcoming a distinguished guest to their campus, Eugene Naughton, the President of Dollywood. The event was part of Truist's Global Capitalism Lecture Series, where Naughton shared his invaluable insights into leadership with a captivated audience of students, faculty, and alumni. His discourse on successful leadership, rooted in Dolly Parton's vision and the significance of family, left an indelible impression on everyone present.

Naughton, a proud alumnus of Radford University (Class of '89), carved an illustrious career in the theme park industry, marking his journey with dedication and expertise. Starting from his roots in Richmond, Virginia, he initiated his career at Paramount’s Kings Dominion while pursuing a degree in culinary management at Radford University. His ascent within Paramount's ranks, earning the title of Vice President of In-Park Services, showcased his commitment and proficiency in the industry.

Transitioning through various roles within Paramount Parks and later moving to Six Flags, Naughton honed his expertise in revenue-building strategies and international park development. It was in 2019 when he joined The Dollywood Company, quickly rising to become its third president the following year.

During his visit to Radford, Naughton elucidated key elements to successful leadership. He emphasized the importance of being a visible, caring, genuine, and thoughtful leader, keeping Dolly's vision and the essence of family at the core of Dollywood's values. These values encompass authenticity, lovingness, entertainment, and exceptional food, which remain pivotal in the park's success.

One of the most exciting topics during the talk was The Dollywood Company's ambitious 10-year, $500 million investment strategy. This strategic plan aims to introduce several resort properties and attractions by the decade's end. Among the upcoming projects are the eagerly awaited HeartSong Lodge & Resort, set to open its doors in 2023, alongside the thrilling Dollywood’s Big Bear Mountain Coaster.

The promise of HeartSong Lodge and the outdoor resort signifies Dollywood's commitment to expanding its offerings, aiming to provide guests with an exceptional and immersive experience, further enriching the legacy Dollywood has established.

Radford University extends its heartfelt gratitude to Truist, Eugene Naughton, Dollywood, the Davis College of Business and Economics, Interim Dean Dr. Angie Stanton, Ms. Rachel Garrison, and Professor Luke Liska for making this enlightening event possible. Naughton's insights into leadership and the vision for Dollywood have undoubtedly left an enduring impact on the Radford University community, inspiring future leaders and innovators.

The event was a remarkable opportunity for students, faculty, and alumni to glean wisdom from an industry luminary like Eugene Naughton, and it serves as a testament to Radford University's commitment to providing valuable experiences and insights to its community.

The visit from Eugene Naughton not only highlighted the successes and vision of Dollywood but also exemplified the caliber of talent and leadership that Radford University nurtures and celebrates among its alumni.

As Eugene Naughton continues to steer the ship at Dollywood, his leadership style, rooted in values and guided by vision, serves as an inspiration for budding leaders, industry enthusiasts, and anyone striving for excellence in their endeavors.
