In our exclusive interview, we sat down with esteemed Radford graduate, Mr. Frink, from the Class of 1989. His evolution from his days at Radford to becoming a triumphant entrepreneur is deeply inspiring. He generously delved into his experiences, insights, and the crucial role his Radford education played in sculpting his journey.

About the Speaker

Mr. Frink, a proud Radford University graduate from the Class of 1989, discovered his passion for leadership and personal development during his years at Radford, especially as a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. This experience honed his leadership skills, allowing him to flourish both academically and socially.  

After graduation, he embarked on a commendable professional journey. Between 1995 and 2012, Mr. Frink held the esteemed position of President at Virginia T's. His unwavering commitment to ethics and personal principles eventually led him to make the tough decision to leave the company.

Later, he occupied leadership roles at Heritage Sportswear and TSF Sportswear, marking significant contributions to the sportswear and apparel sectors.

Now residing in Charleston, SC, Mr. Frink is the visionary Owner and Founder of JLS Business Consulting LLC. His professional ascent and unwavering ethical approach make him a cherished alumnus. Today, he continues to enrich Virginia colleges with his profound insights and experiences.

The Radford Experience

Looking back, Mr. Frink sees his Radford University days as the cornerstone of his entrepreneurial ventures. He was a spirited and devoted student, majoring in Business Management, which laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. The cohesive campus atmosphere, nurturing faculty, and diverse student body significantly fostered his holistic development.

"The Radford stint was transformative," he reminisces. "I encountered several pivotal moments in my academic journey, whether leading in the fraternity or tackling organizational management challenges. These experiences shaped me, teaching adaptability."

Beyond academics, Mr. Frink was an active participant in student-led organizations and extramural activities. He recalls the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity being particularly influential. "It expanded my social horizons, forging lifelong bonds. I remain in touch with many fraternity brothers, some of whom have been instrumental in job referrals or even housing recommendations.  These are some of my best friends still to this day."

The Work World

Upon his graduation, he dove into the corporate world, amassing invaluable expertise in management and entrepreneurship. The corporate environment, though challenging, offered insights into organizational structures, business methods, and leadership essentials.

Sharing his mantra, Mr. Frink emphasizes, "Two habits set you apart: making yourself indispensable to the employer and genuine diligence."

On distinguishing himself from stereotypes of the younger workforce, he advises, "To truly stand out, be proactive and relentlessly chase your dreams."

Consistently, his professional guideline has been: "Avoid shortcuts. They can jeopardize your path to success. Stay true to yourself, and success will follow."

Building a Business

Embarking on his entrepreneurial journey, Mr. Frink had clear goals and plans. The initial phase presented intense challenges, from long work hours to financial struggles.

Reflecting on this period, he admits, "The start was tough, and doubts did arise. But my Radford education gave me resilience, analytical thinking, and unparalleled perseverance."

As he ventured deeper into business, Mr. Frink faced the complexities of starting, selling, and assessing a business's potential. Emphasizing the importance of personal priorities, he offers wise advice: "Always make sure your family is at the center of your career relationships." On preparing a business for sale, he notes, "It's complex. The type of business deeply affects its market appeal, which requires thorough evaluation."
