Innovation Workshop for Brazilian Students/Professors
Radford University Entrepreneurship Professor, Dr. Steve Childers, invited the Venture Lab to host an innovative workshop for Brazilian students and faculty working in cyber security. The Innovation Workshop was held in the Venture Lab Thursday, November 10, 2022.
The engineering students and professors are from SENAI - Serviço Nacional de Aprendizagem Industrial or National Service for Industrial Training in English, which is the largest institution of professional and technological education in Latin America. With the guidance of Dr. Sam Steidle, the Director of Venture Lab, the engineers completed a Design for Change workshop to help create solutions to challenges while developing self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
We asked Brand Ambassadors and ELC members Jackie King, Mason Forsyth, and Jackson Hughes about their experience as freshmen. The engineers created an empathy-led connection with the Brand Ambassadors and worked to connect solutions to cyber security, engineering, and artificial intellegence. “Freshmen are not prepared and have no exposure to business and entrepreneurship” [prior to college], says Jackie King. The Brand Ambassadors voiced their biggest fears including: having a hard time meeting new people, creating a social life, and deciding on a career path.
Here is the brilliant solution the participants came up with: a gamification app with badges and scores for people who mentor and help others get acclimated to campus life; integration with the city - restaurants, places to visit, and a section responsible for hearing complaints. The team from SENAI also acknowledged that design-thinking could, in fact, be a valuable tool in the field of artificial intelligence, in particular. After all, AI is still designed by humans (for now) so human-centered design approaches are quite appropriate to integrate into the process.
The overarching goal of the project is to develop a collaboration between students in SENAI institutes in Brazil with Radford University’s School of Computing and Information Sciences and the College of Business and Economics. “We are all enthusiastic about sharing information between each other and continuing this relationship for years to come” - Dr. Steve Childers
